Hi guys and one gal! How have you been? It’s been a while since we’ve posted anything so I’m going to bring you up to speed. The last time I posted I talked about the business meeting we were having on a Friday night and you complained and said we weren’t doing anything fun or exciting. Boy were you wrong! We lined up the rest of the year’s brewing schedule and drank beer! It doesn’t get much better than that.

Then last Friday we met up with Eric and Jennifer from Stolze Style Brewing at Alpha Brewing Company for a little home brewer meet and greet.

image

Alpha’s excellent beer was only topped by the excellent company. We shared many great stories and delicious beers and by the end of the night our conversation shifted to collaboration. Now, I can’t tell you all the details about our collaboration beer because it’s top secret, but I can tell you it’s going to be a “Storter.” You might be asking yourself, “what the hell is a Storter?” I will tell you. A “Storter” is a beautiful combination of a Stout and a Porter (thank you Alpha for the inspiration). Basically it takes all the best characteristics of both styles and gently and lovingly swirls them together. I can sense your excitement. This style mash – up is great, but it’s not even the best part. The best part is…TOP SECRET! Sorry I can’t spill the beans just yet. The only other thing I can tell you is this epic collaboration is taking place on Friday, September 19th and it will blow doors down.

image

Your socks will literally be knocked off your feet. Not unlike that picture up there. Smoke will come out and everything.

That brings us to today! It’s Friday and you know what that means, we’re brewing! We will be brewing our Smokey Grove Apple Smoked Porter for a competition that is taking place in October.

image

The smokey apple flavor of our porter will go wonderfully with the fall weather and more than likely win the best beer in the entire universe award. That’s a real award and we’re going to win it because I’m Bob Johnson, and I’m a winner! (Where did that Bob Johnson business come from and what does it mean?)

Until next time babies!

You: Friday night business meeting?

Me: Yes, Friday night business meeting.
You: Why aren’t you brewing or kegging or bottling or doing something fun?

Me: You don’t know fun until you’ve been to a Regular Guy business meeting!

You: Sounds boring and not fun.

Me: You’re wrong and I’m done with this conversation. I win.

You can be such a downer sometimes, you should try to be more positive.

Any who, yes we are having a business meeting tonight. We are planning our future brews and reviewing recipes for those future brews. We’ll show up in our business suits.

With our briefcases.

image

And legal pads.

image

Schematics will be drawn.

image

Heated arguments will ensue.

image

An understanding will be met.

image

Followed by a group hug.

image

None of that will actually happen. We’ll drink beer and talk about our recipes. I’m hoping to get a little work done on our website as well. Now having wasted a few minutes of your precious time I’ll let you get back to pretending to work on this glorious Friday. Have a great weekend everybody!

Until next time…

A few years ago, when Justin, Brian and I were cranking out one (less than superb but ultimately fun and enjoyable) short film after the next, I caught a documentary on IFC that a guy made about his own journey to make a film.

d_1744Much like many wanna-be filmmakers, including us at one time, he had documented the making of his movie, probably with some thought of including a behind-the-scenes extra on the DVDs he would give out to friends and family. Because who wouldn’t want to watch a crappy 15 minute documentary about what it took to make an even crappier feature?

On that note, my sincerest thanks to all our friends and family for suffering through some of our past cinematic endeavors with a smile. We had a lot of fun making them, and we would eventually get better, but damn…those early films are almost painful to watch now.

But in this one case…the documentary extra became a much better movie than the film it was documenting. The actual film project was a disaster. Everything that could go wrong did. The guy made the biggest rookie filmmaker mistake in the book. He enlisted friends to be his actors and crew and as a result, he had to do almost all the lighting, shooting, sound work and editing himself. Not a fun way to make a film. I felt for this guy. I had been in those shoes. I had made these same mistakes in the past. Doing everything yourself, particularly when it is supposed to be a team effort, will suck the fun out of a project. Even more so, when your supposed “crew” are doing nothing more than taking up space on whatever nearby furniture they can find and begging to take a break for lunch. Right. Because I’m sure that you worked up quite the appetite while taking that 45 minute nap. Continue reading →

The Regular Guy’s Secret Weapon

In the nearly two years that have passed since launching this site, I’ve talked about a lot of things.

I’ve talked about the technical stuff that makes our beer become beer.

I’ve talked about the hopes and dreams that fuel us and drive us to brew our own beer for a living.

I’ve talked about all manner of silliness including (but by no means limited to) dinosaurs wearing t-shirts…the Office…pink striped chairs…growing hops…grilling steaks…curling…and urinals made out of old kegs.

Today though, I want to talk about something a bit different. Today, I dedicate this blog to something very near and dear to me. My good friend…and fellow Regular Guy…Brian Koontz.

Life reflection and roller coasters

I feel like I owe you all an apology, I haven’t exactly been on my blogging game lately. I’m not usually one to make excuses, but this new job is really cramping my style creatively. I have to give a lot of credit to Seth for stepping up and taking over the blog in my brief absence and satisfying your need to read. Anyway, I’m sorry, and I’ll do my best to keep up on my blogging duties.

On Monday my wife and I played hooky from work and kept our son home from school to go to Six Flags St. Louis.

image

Now this wasn’t just any old day at Six Flags, this was this season’s opening day. It’s the first time the park opens throughout the week and not just the weekend.

image

If you think this would be a busy day, you would be wrong. We chose this day for that reason specifically.

image

First of all, school isn’t out for the summer. All the kiddies are still reading, writing and ‘rithmetic-ing. Second of all, it’s a Monday and most of the adults are headed back to work, not to play. Lastly, the theme park’s water park doesn’t open until next weekend.

image

Many Six Flaggers wait until both parks are open to get more for their money. All of these things were working in our favor. Aside from a handful of people who had the same brilliant idea as us and a number of schools on field trips, the park was relatively empty.

image

I don’t know about you, but if I can avoid waiting 2 hours in line to ride the Batman coaster that lasts a whole 60 seconds, I’m going to do it! We’ve done our research.

image

It was a beautiful day to ride roller coasters. The temp never reached 80 degrees, it was overcast and there was a nice cool breeze blowing.

image

There we were, my trusty wife and our uncharacteristically adventurous six year old son. Luckily he’s tall for his age and can ride all but two roller coasters in the park, and he LOVES riding them.

image

We had a blast. My favorite part of the day was when we were on a ride and I could look over and see the sheer delight and excitement in my family’s faces. Then after the ride sharing our individual experience, laughing loudly as if no one was around.

image

By the end of the day, we were exhausted and soaked to the bone. We smiled and laughed so much our cheeks were sore.

image

These moments are priceless and can be so easily lost in the daily grind of work and school and life in general.

image

Wondering how this was going to relate to brewing? Well, here we go. When we open our brewery, it’s going to be a lot of work. I understand this and embrace it. I’m not naive, the amount of work is not underestimated. I, along with Brian, have owned and operated a restaurant that occupied at least 16 hours of our day seven days per week. BUT when the daily operation is down to a science it’ll be three best friends making beer. We won’t be bound by the corporate office “allowing” us to take a vacation day to spend much needed time with our families. It’s freedom. I’ve already been my own boss, it’s the greatest feeling anyone with the entrepreneurial spirit can experience. It’s probably why I’ve never been fully comfortable in my day job. A yearning for more.

Our brewery will happen, and when it does, I believe our personal lives and work lives will be fulfilled.
