Are you ready for a very special update? The update you’ve all been waiting for over a month for? Let’s do this! Back on August 15th I wrote a blog post about how StolzeStyle Brewing and Regular Guy Brewing got together to share some beers and stories and ended up agreeing to do a collaborative brew. Need a refresher? You can read the blog post here.

All up to speed? Good! Let’s continue. For the last month I’ve been teasing you and everyone else about the TOP SECRET ingredients that were going to make our “Storter” (again, thanks for the inspiration Alpha Brewing Company!) If you’re asking yourself what a “Storter” is, you either:

A) were too lazy to click the link and read the blog post

2) have never been to Alpha Brewing Company (you’re missing out)

C) have a terrible short term memory and/or

D) all of the above

I’ll do this one more time. A “Storter” is a beautiful combination of a Stout and a Porter. Basically it takes all the best characteristics of both styles and gently and lovingly swirls them together. This is a great beer brewed by Alpha and Eric and Jennifer from StolzeStyle just so happened to bring some along, as inspiration for our own of course!

image

It’s a fine looking beer and delicious to boot! Now we could have always just taken Alpha’s recipe and brewed it, but we could just go there and drink theirs. So we made some additions and gave it a new twist.

If you haven’t noticed, I’m stalling as hard as I can. Trying to write whatever I can to make you wait even longer to find out the TOP SECRET ingredients that we have been bragging about for over a month now. Do you know what happened to me the day? It’s so damn funny! I was walking down the stairs when all of the sudden I…I’m just kidding, are you ready to finally know the TOP SECRET ingredients? Ok. Remember, this is a Storter, a dark, lovely beer. Rich and roasty. We added brown sugar and…

image

BACON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes bacon. You heard me right, bacon! Say it with me, BACON! We added brown sugar and bacon to an already perfect Storter recipe. Well, now that the cat’s out of the bag, here’s our night in pictures.

Seth brought over some new toys!

This is our new conical fermenter.

image

Our new 25 gallon kettle.

image

Our new mash tun.

image

Our hops were provided by Music City Brew Supply.

image

There’s that bacon I was talking about and the brown sugar and hops and the bacon. Did I mention the bacon? I think I mentioned the bacon. Bacon.

image

There’s Eric and Brian doughing in.

image

Brian presents his handiwork. He’s very skilled at dumping things into other things.

image

Jen cracks the whip on Eric. There better not be any grain clumps in there!

image

The first runnings.

image

Eric and Brian discussing important brewery related things.

image

Uh oh! The Brian fans are going to be so jealous!

image

The final runnings in the kettle, getting ready for the hot break.

image

Boiling away like a champ! Our one hop addition is in and brown sugar added.

image

We fill our buckets two at a time! Look closely, there’s bacon in there!

image

End of the night with Eric.

End of the night with Jen.

There you have it! We didn’t pitch the yeast yet. The beer will cold crash for a bit to let any fat from the bacon separate. We’ll skim it all off and transfer to the new conical fermenter and then pitch the yeast. Then we have more bacon additions coming. We’ll keep you posted on the progress.

Until next time…

Good morning Monday! Said no one ever. At least I have a photo update to brighten your day! Friday night we got together and brewed our Smokey Grove Apple Smoked Porter. We changed the recipe slightly this time around, but only to lessen the amount of smoke flavor. As one random taster said, “it tastes like a campfire in your mouth!” Not necessarily a bad thing, but we collectively agreed that the smoke could be toned down a bit. So without further adieu, here’s our night in pictures!

The brew session is about to begin!

There’s the magical water correction ingredients to adjust the water to make a perfect porter!

Here’s some of the grains that make up our Smokey Grove Apple Smoked Porter.

Almost time to mash in!

Brian and I mashing in. It’s a tough job, but somebody’s gotta do it!

Brian loves the aroma of the grains as they mix with the water.

Here’s a closer look at the grain.

Seth checks the numbers of the first runnings.

This is the first runnings in the kettle. It’s a beautiful sight!

Brian takes a well deserved break!

The wort is starting to boil and we’re getting ready for the hot break.

Full on boil and hop additions.

Just when you think it couldn’t get any better, throw in some apples!

image

Aerate, pitch the yeast and call it a night!

There you have it, our Friday night brew session in pictures. This batch will go on to a competition, we’ll keep you posted on the results when we get them.

Hopefully the beer porn will ease you into your Monday! Until next time…

It seems just as we say hello to the weekend, we sadly have to say goodbye. The Regular Guys had a pretty productive Friday night. We got together and bottled our Hot Blonde Jalapeño Blonde Ale and kegged our EPA. Then we had a well deserved night out for research and development of course!

Let’s start with the Hot Blonde. Lately we’ve been tinkering with our recipes, taking everyone’s comments and suggestions to heart and combining them with our own ideas and meeting somewhere in the middle. We then make minor adjustments to our recipes and see how it turns out. The Hot Blonde may have been a little too spicy and we’ve been trying to figure out exactly at what point all that spiciness comes in. Well, we figured it out and an incredibly delicious beer was born!

How about some pictures? Ok!

image

We know this isn’t a “proper” glass for a blonde ale, but we aren’t picky. This is hand model extraordinaire Brian showing off the color and clarity of our brew. She’s a pretty beer!

image

This is also Brian enjoying the Hot Blonde. You can tell he approves by his eyebrow.

image

Let the bottling commence!

image

Seth is a pro. He’s the only one we trust to fill our bottles. I’ve tried, and was really bad at it.

Up next is the unnamed EPA. We’ve brewed this beer three times now and we’re hoping this version will be the recipe we can stick with.

Let’s picture shall we? We shall!

image

Secondary is complete and by the aroma, the dry hop went splendidly!

image

Brewmaster Seth is overseeing the transfer of the EPA to keg number one.

image

Brian is keeping a close eye on the filters.

image

Here’s a closer look at the filters. There’s some ridiculously good looking beer in there!

image

And finally, the filtered EPA is being transferred into keg number two. It is now being carbonated and we’ll get to test it out on Friday!

I hope you all have a fantastic week or at least a tolerable one!

Until next time…
