It’s update time!!!

I know you’ve all been patiently waiting for us to update you on Friday night, so here it goes.

We didn’t brew, but we bottled our wheat. Remember when I posed the question, “did we turn a beer making corner?”

We did.
A hard right turn.
Hold on tight kind of turn.

We’re back baby! Our wheat, although not even carbonated yet, was amazing! The color was perfect! The flavor was perfect! The alcohol content was perfect! It is exactly what we’ve been waiting for! Exclamation points for everyone!!!!!!

We can’t wait to taste this bad boy again in about two weeks. More to come!

I want to take a minute to talk about Friday the 13th, the movie not the actual day itself, and not the series, just the first one, for now anyway. The original film was released May 9, 1980. It was directed by Sean S. Cunningham and “starred” Kevin Bacon.

Behold!!!! Plumbing mastery at its finest!

In a previous post I had sung the praises of our workhorse brew pump. Check her out now!

While the pump had always been an awesome tool in our brewing arsenal, up until now it has left much to be desired in its ability to achieve and maintain prime. As such we would constantly have to disconnect and reconnect hoses, often spewing boiling wort or water all over the place. At best this would leave us with a very sticky floor. At worst, second degree burns to the hands and arms. Either way, this kinda sucked.

As such, we made a few changes to our pump plumbing, and I for one could not be happier with the result.

First, we reconfigured the pump head to a vertical alignment with the intake at the bottom. This makes it much easier for air bubbles in the line to vacate the system. Less air in the lines=easier prime. Secondly, we added valves for each of the intake ports. This gives us much more control over the flow of liquid and also seems to drastically reduce the amount of air that finds its way into the system.

The end result? A much more efficient brew process and a lot less mopping.

Last Friday we brewed another batch of our Pale Ale. This recipe was tweaked a little based off our impression of our last two batches and some taste changes we wanted to make. With a hops change and a new grain addition, we are hoping we found the combo we are looking for.

Now to get technical, as far as the hands on brewing stuff, that is. Friday night was a huge night for us as brewers. All of our numbers matched up, our temperatures were constant, our mash and brewhouse efficiencies were were the highest we’ve ever seen them. Seth’s ingenious plumbing set up worked beautifully, we didn’t spill a drop! And it was the fastest we’ve ever brewed beer. All in all it was an awesome night! I’m extremely proud of Seth and Brian for all of the hard work, planning, and creativity that’s gone into our beer so far. I definitely feel like we are on the right track and I can’t wait to sample the fruits of our labor.

This Friday we bottle our latest wheat concoction, wish us luck!

Whether we get paid to brew or not at this point, it still kind of behooves us to label our beer. How else will we know which of the fine brews we are handing out to friends and family?

That said, here are the new labels for the Regular Guy Brewing family of beers, complete with phony bar codes and warning labels. Enjoy!
