Zombies in the month of May

I learned something this week. It’s something that I probably should have known…but I didn’t. I feel shame for that. I take great pride in my knowledge of all manners of esoteric facts and figures, but this one slipped past my radar.

Drumroll please….

May…is…ZOMBIE AWARENESS MONTH!

Harsh Perspective…

Sometimes things happen in life that put your concepts of reality into some very harsh perspective. Something you think is important one moment can suddenly and instantaneously become trivial and petty. Other things can become even more important, even vital, when illuminated under the proper light.

Last night, I saw such a light.

longmireI was at home, sitting on the couch next to my beautiful wife. It was about 11 o’clock and she had just nodded off for her usual pre-bedtime nap. I had just pulled up an episode of one of my favorite shows to watch while also doing a bit of brewery research on my phone. The dog had her head in my lap and, much like my wife, was sound asleep. The house was still for the moment. No noises could be heard other than the calm, yet raspy, tones of Sheriff Walt Longmire. Continue reading →

Goodbye Old Blue…

14461640_130225224422This morning I had to do something that I really hated to do. It’s not something that I do very often, though I should probably do it more regularly than I do.

I, Seth Treptow, threw away…an old pair of underwear.

It’s nothing I’m particularly proud of.

I don’t know when this particular pair of underwear came into my life, but it had probably in rotation for several years. It was never the fanciest of pairs. Just your standard cotton boxer briefs. You know, the ones that come in a four pack from Hanes. Far from elegant, but more than capable of getting the job done. During its time of service, it had performed incredibly admirably, always without fail. It supported my junk and absorbed my funk with the best of them. And for that, I am extremely appreciative.

mormonunderwearBut over the last few cycles of wearing, I have noticed that this pair, which I will affectionately refer to henceforth as “Old Blue,” had become increasingly holy. And by holy, I don’t mean religious…not like those super sexy undergarments the Mormons sport. No. I mean that Old Blue was getting tattered and worn beyond the point of functional usefulness.

It is what it is

Everything happens for a reason? Do you believe that or is it something people say when looking for a silver lining to a dark cloud. Lately there have been some dark clouds looming over my money making job that have left a sour taste in my mouth. Just when I think I’m set on the job I somewhat enjoy, working the hours I like, it’s taken away from me. Then I’m told the majority of the year I’m still going to be working that same job on those same hours. Great right? Wrong! That gets taken away as well.

Now everything’s all jumbled and my future is unclear. I don’t know what schedule I’m going to have week to week or what job I’ll be on day to day.

That’s where this little gem comes in, “everything happens for a reason.” I’ll buy into this saying for the time being. If I want to think deeply into the phrase I could make it work for my situation. Maybe if I fell into the job I wanted so early in my career, I’d spend the next 30 years like a robot. Come into work, do my job, go home and repeat. There’s nothing wrong with that, but maybe I’d lose my drive, creativity and ambition along the way. Maybe the discomfort and uncertainty is supposed to drive me to do something bigger. Maybe I’m not meant to spend the next 30 years working with steel.

Well now the whole, “everything happens for a reason” thing is starting to sound pretty good! I’m starting to feel better about this situation and I can see why people would buy into it.

Now, I wouldn’t call it a “sign,” I’m not going to go off on that tangent, but maybe being uncomfortable in my current job situation will spark my ambitions even further to become a full time professional brewer. Only time will tell. All I know is yesterday I was relatively happy at work and today I feel like I’m frantically searching for something else.

Now that I’ve bummed you out, a cat picture…

Bad day, bad week

We’ve all had a bad day before, maybe even a couple in row, but have you ever had an entire week that you wanted to slam into a brick wall and punch it in the face? I’m having one of those this week. It’s a “if it can go wrong, it will go wrong, horribly, horribly wrong” kind of weeks.

There is some light at the end of this tunnel though. Friday night we are brewing our soon to be world famous Smokey Grove Apple Smoked Porter, and guess who will be in attendance? Me! I’m extra excited because I missed last week’s brew session.

So expect new photos and an update next week. Get excited folks, it’s going to be awesome!
