You should all consider yourselves lucky. As I write this, it is currently Sunday evening. Relax time. Unwind time. My wife is busy doing wife stuff, kids are in bed and normally I would have taken advantage of this rare quiet time to indulge in a game or two of NHL 14.

Early May back in 2014,
What a very special night for…Regular Guy Brewing.
What a beer, oh what a night.

I apologize. My terrible singing voice even comes through on here.

I also apologize to The Four Seasons for ruining your song.

Friday night we got together to bottle a couple beers. We bottled our unnamed EPA.

That’s the beautiful baby in the foreground. The other beautiful baby in the background is the one and only Yuengling Traditional Lager, obviously. We drank some of that too. Our EPA turned out great for the first dtaft recipe. We have some minor tweaks we want to make before we brew it again, but all in all this one was a success.

We also bottled our Smokey Grove Apple Smoked Porter.

You can call it “black beauty” or simply delicious! Of course the Yuengling jumped in for the photo op as well.

Full flavor descriptions and ingredient profiles will be coming soon for these two mainstays.

Have a great week everybody!

What are you doing late at night?

When we started brewing, our “brewery” was in my garage. It’s a pretty normal place for a home brewer to brew. It’s efficient because bringing a big old kettle to boil on my electric range would take a lifetime, it’s better to spill on the garage floor because all I have to do is wet the floor with the hose and squeegee away and even though the smell of the boiling wort and hops is one of our favorite smells, the significant other probably wouldn’t appreciate the entire house smelling as such. So it worked for us as it does many other home brewers.

The difference for us was my wife and I had just bought the house a few months prior and we had some nosey neighbors.

One Saturday morning, after a long night of brewing, I was in the garage cleaning up a bit. The nosiest of neighbors just happened to be walking his dog right by my driveway and decided to stop and have a chat. Here’s how it went:

Mr. Nosey: Hey how’s it going?

Me: Not bad, how about you?

Mr. Nosey: I’m good. Hey, I uh, I work afternoons and I get off pretty late. I drive home this way and I see you guys hanging out in the garage.

Me: Yep. We…

Mr. Nosey: (interrupting) What are you doing late at night?

I couldn’t help but chuckle. Here we were in a brand new neighborhood with a very crude homebrew setup, late at night AND Breaking Bad was at the height of its popularity. I knew what he was thinking, but come on! If we were cooking “Blue Sky,” “Big Blue,” “Blue Magic,” “Fring’s Blue” or simply “Blue” don’t you think we would have closed the garage door?!? Seriously!

Me: My friends and I are brewing beer.

Mr. Nosey: OOOOOH! Ok!

He was relieved to say the least. He then went on to tell me all about every beer he’s had in the last ten years. I listened politely because I’m way too nice and eventually we went on our separate ways.

Moral of the story? There isn’t one. I just like the story.

Happy Friday fools!

Time to fulfill my promise

Last week I told you I would have some exciting news after Friday and I think it’s high time I share it with you. Your patience has paid off friends! I’ll give you a picture clue:

That’s right, the Regular Guys have finally entered a beer into competition! Our Hot Blonde Jalapeño Blonde Ale has officially been entered in two categories in the 19th Annual Microfest here in St. Louis, Missouri. Our beautiful lady will compete in the Blonde Ale category as well as the Spice/Herb/Vegetable Beer category.

A kudos and a fist bump from my dad is great and all, but he likes pretty much anything I do. We are really looking forward to getting some unbiased feedback from professional beer judges. Tasting and judging is April 26th and 27th so we’ll keep you posted!

And now a little update. Saturday night we got together to bottle our Hot Blonde Jalapeño Blonde Ale, keg and carbonate our unnamed EPA, and transfer our Smokey Grove Apple Smoked Porter to secondary and add more apples.

The Hot Blonde is a beautiful hay color and carbonated perfectly. I can’t say enough good things about the aroma and flavor of this beer. Our unnamed EPA smells and already tastes amazing,  even without carbonation. The Smokey Grove has this wonderfully light smokey aroma with a punch of apple and is black as black can be!

All in all it was a good weekend for beer. Until next time…

Kegging and such

Friday night we got together and kegged our Hot Blonde Jalapeño Blonde Ale for carbonation.

(In case you forgot what this pretty lady looks like)

When we opened the fermenter, what a delight for the senses it was! It was a beautiful hay colored brew. The smell of the jalapeños really came through and the flavor was incredible despite not being carbonated. I can only assume that if your beer is enjoyable before carbonation, it’s going to set the world on fire when it is!

We may have some exciting news about the Hot Blonde that I’ll fill you in on after it happens. Easy biggin’ you’ll find out on Friday.

We also transferred our yet to be named Extra Pale Ale to secondary and dry hopped for that extra boost of hops aroma and flavor. This beer has only been fermenting for two weeks and I wanted to sample it already! Wonderful aroma, citrusy and floral. I’m excited for this beer!

We didn’t do much to our Smokey Grove Apple Smoked Porter because it’s only been fermenting for a week, just watched her bubble away and make alcohol.

We also made a schedule for our next three beers we’re going to brew. A couple of redemption beers and something brand new! Stay tuned because it’s going to get exciting!
