Before I delve too deeply into the dulcet tones of my own typing, let me take a moment to issue a sincere apology for not blogging much (at all really) over the course of the last few months. I don’t really have a good reason for my online absence, so please let me offer a few completely fabricated and generally nonsensical reasons for my lack of writing:alien-beer

  • My dog ate my laptop.
  • I was being held hostage by underwear gnomes.
  • I had to go on a long soul searching journey to find myself again.
  • I was on a drug and hate crime fueled bender.
  • I was busy training a monkey to ride a dog.
  • I discovered the meaning of life…but then forgot it.
  • Aliens. Don’t ask for details. It will only bring back the nightmares.
  • I was just too gassy to type.

So now that those feeble excuses are out of the way, let’s turn to the here and now.

Hobby or Vocation?

If you’ve come within earshot of me anytime in the last year, there is a fair to decent chance that you have heard me talk (at length) about beer and brewing. It’s been amazing to see how conversations, regardless of their topics of origin, can evolve into a discussion about beer. Other than my baby girl, it’s just about the only thing I talk about these days.

You could call me obsessed…but you’d probably be being polite.

And while these conversations have been enjoyable on average, there has come a point in almost all of them, when I become fully cognizant that the dialogue has become more of a monologue. They just tune out. They politely nod their heads and make the occasional audible grunt, but they have largely checked out and are simply waiting for our chat to come to a close. Continue reading →

Pink Striped Chair…

Well the brewery control panel is done. Finished it last night. I would be much more celebratory, but I am currently very annoyed by a non-beer related issue.

As I may have mentioned, the wife and I are expecting our first child. Our baby girl…Camryn Alexis…will be born in April. This is not the annoying part. This could not be more awesome.

chairThe annoying part has been a bunch of completely unnecessary drama that I had to go through in making arrangements for delivery of a pink striped chair for her nursery.

We ordered this chair from Target.com and had it sent to my office so that we wouldn’t have to run the risk of noone being home when it was delivered. This turned out to be a much bigger pain in the arse than we could have ever expected. I could go on, but I think that it might be a better use of my time if I just shared the following email that I sent out this morning. Continue reading →

Let me perfectly clear about something. I frickin’ love Play it Again Sports.

Always have. Since I was a kid, I have loved going to Play it Again and perusing their various aisles and departments full of used sporting goods. Regardless the sport, if I need a piece of equipment…or even if I just have the slightest inkling that I might want to try a sport…Play it Again is always my first stop. And why shouldn’t it be? You can find pretty decent stuff at some really decent prices. Some guys need the newest and the best. Not me. I find that second (and often third, fourth and fifth) hand equipment typically does the job just fine. Continue reading →

It was a brisk evening of brewing. A chill was in the air, and the leaves are beginning their metamorphosis into an amber palate of color. Amber. Like the glorious coloring of our second batch of American Pale Ale. I have not been this excited since I snuck into a bar as an adolescent to see my first pair of woman-boobies! Ah, the memories. Not unlike that wet tee-shirt contest, the sight of those full 3 cases of APA were breath taking!

I do believe it is safe to say, that the learning-curve regarding the transition to all-grain brewing has been concurred! As reported earlier, the all-grain venture with the Honey Brown, was also a success. Two in a row is definitely a pattern. As the Regular Guy brewers retreat into the arms of nature for some pyrotechnics, beer downing and camaraderie, the APA will make another voyage across my lips.

I anticipate the full-bodied, succulent, robust, yet subtle flavor upon my lips will stir my soul and excite the senses. You see, its not too far removed from that dampened undergarment mammary competition. Ah, the memories!
