I know it’s Monday, but you should be happy. Not just because I’ve brought you some pretty beer pictures, but because we have a short work week! That’s right, just four short days until a nice long weekend! Continue reading →

This week, like most weeks, started off with an update about our brewnanigans (yes I just combined brewing with shenanigans, deal with it!) that took place over the weekend. This week, unlike most weeks, comes with exciting news, an experience the Regular Guys haven’t had yet.

Let’s rewind to two Wednesdays ago.

It was a day like most other early September days, incredibly hot, terribly humid. After a long day of work I found myself at a FedEx with two packages. One package addressed to Nick from Nick’s Beer Blog the other to Lee from Beerin’it. I was sending our beer out for sampling and review. This is something that we’ve never done before. Sure we’ve given friends and family and a few local strangers samples of our beer, and while we value their opinions, it tends to be ever so slightly biased. Anyway, finally we were going to get an honest review from people who know beer.

Thursday. I didn’t think much about the delivery as it wasn’t going to arrive at the destinations until Friday. My only concern was that the packages would make it in one piece.

Friday. I checked the status of the delivery on the FedEx website every hour on the hour. I gave updates to Nick and Lee every time I checked until finally it had been delivered. Then I proceeded to bug them more about when they were going to sample our beer! Not my most professional behavior, I must admit. Nick came right out and said he wouldn’t be sampling until early the following week. Lee put his in the refrigerator right away, but kept me on pins and needles until last Sunday when he posted this to Twitter.

The complement and beautiful photo were well worth the wait! I felt like a giant weight had been lifted off my shoulders. Someone from a different geographical area enjoyed and appreciated our beer! It’s a wonderful feeling. You can read the full review here.

Now Nick kept us waiting a bit longer, but we just so happened to send our beer to him when he had five other beers to review. Sucks to be him right? So I did get an idea of how his review was going to go when he sent me a direct message on Twitter last Tuesday that went a little something like this.

image

One of the best porters he’s ever had? That’s a huge compliment coming from a guy who reviews beer all the time! You can read the full review here.

Two beers positively reviewed from two different parts of the country, not a bad start for Regular Guy Brewing! Nick has two more reviews coming, one for our Hot Blonde Jalapeño Blonde Ale and one for our currently unnamed and not quite finished EPA. I’ll share those as they become available.

Until next time…keep the shiny side up!

Friday night, as usual, the Regular Guys got together to do something brew related. This time we had our EPA all carbonated and ready to be bottled. We’ve brewed this recipe three times now, and with minor adjustments along the way, I think we may have nailed it folks! She’s a gorgeous beer.

See I told you.

Here’s our night in pictures, enjoy!

Here’s our EPA all carbonated and ready to go. Seth had a “hand” in the bottling process, get it?!? I’m hilarious!

image

The bottles are eagerly awaiting the EPA. They’re so excited! You can tell if you look closely.

image

The EPA has a beautiful thick foamy head.

image

For all you Brian fans out there, he’s giving the eyebrow of approval. That’s how you know it’s good!

Seth, the bottling filling champion of the world. He has a trophy to prove it.

I AM THE CAP MASTER!!!

image

I was trying to look super manly, but I came off looking more like Garth Algar. It’s Wayne’s World!

image

Ahh yes! Freshly capped beer ready to share, or keep for ourselves if we feel like being stingy.

Well, that’s it. Go back to work.

Until next time…

It seems just as we say hello to the weekend, we sadly have to say goodbye. The Regular Guys had a pretty productive Friday night. We got together and bottled our Hot Blonde Jalapeño Blonde Ale and kegged our EPA. Then we had a well deserved night out for research and development of course!

Let’s start with the Hot Blonde. Lately we’ve been tinkering with our recipes, taking everyone’s comments and suggestions to heart and combining them with our own ideas and meeting somewhere in the middle. We then make minor adjustments to our recipes and see how it turns out. The Hot Blonde may have been a little too spicy and we’ve been trying to figure out exactly at what point all that spiciness comes in. Well, we figured it out and an incredibly delicious beer was born!

How about some pictures? Ok!

image

We know this isn’t a “proper” glass for a blonde ale, but we aren’t picky. This is hand model extraordinaire Brian showing off the color and clarity of our brew. She’s a pretty beer!

image

This is also Brian enjoying the Hot Blonde. You can tell he approves by his eyebrow.

image

Let the bottling commence!

image

Seth is a pro. He’s the only one we trust to fill our bottles. I’ve tried, and was really bad at it.

Up next is the unnamed EPA. We’ve brewed this beer three times now and we’re hoping this version will be the recipe we can stick with.

Let’s picture shall we? We shall!

image

Secondary is complete and by the aroma, the dry hop went splendidly!

Brewmaster Seth is overseeing the transfer of the EPA to keg number one.

image

Brian is keeping a close eye on the filters.

image

Here’s a closer look at the filters. There’s some ridiculously good looking beer in there!

image

And finally, the filtered EPA is being transferred into keg number two. It is now being carbonated and we’ll get to test it out on Friday!

I hope you all have a fantastic week or at least a tolerable one!

Until next time…

A few years ago, when Justin, Brian and I were cranking out one (less than superb but ultimately fun and enjoyable) short film after the next, I caught a documentary on IFC that a guy made about his own journey to make a film.

d_1744Much like many wanna-be filmmakers, including us at one time, he had documented the making of his movie, probably with some thought of including a behind-the-scenes extra on the DVDs he would give out to friends and family. Because who wouldn’t want to watch a crappy 15 minute documentary about what it took to make an even crappier feature?

On that note, my sincerest thanks to all our friends and family for suffering through some of our past cinematic endeavors with a smile. We had a lot of fun making them, and we would eventually get better, but damn…those early films are almost painful to watch now.

But in this one case…the documentary extra became a much better movie than the film it was documenting. The actual film project was a disaster. Everything that could go wrong did. The guy made the biggest rookie filmmaker mistake in the book. He enlisted friends to be his actors and crew and as a result, he had to do almost all the lighting, shooting, sound work and editing himself. Not a fun way to make a film. I felt for this guy. I had been in those shoes. I had made these same mistakes in the past. Doing everything yourself, particularly when it is supposed to be a team effort, will suck the fun out of a project. Even more so, when your supposed “crew” are doing nothing more than taking up space on whatever nearby furniture they can find and begging to take a break for lunch. Right. Because I’m sure that you worked up quite the appetite while taking that 45 minute nap. Continue reading →
